Job Function:  Medical
Project:

Western Health is a major tertiary health service serving a diverse, multicultural and multilingual community in the rapidly growing western suburbs of Melbourne. It operates three Emergency Departments (ED) at the Footscray, Sunshine and Williamstown campuses.

An expansion of the Sunshine Emergency Department has been completed and includes a new resuscitation, fast track, short stay, paediatric hub, Behavioural Assessment Unit and a crisis hub. The construction of the New Footscray Hospital has commenced and is planned for completion in 2025.

The Emergency Registrar position offers a unique opportunity to join a growing and dedicated Emergency Medicine (EM) team. The position requires applicants to be eligible for general or provisional registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Authority (AHPRA). If AHPRA registration is limited, your application must include evidence that the level of supervision required is Level 2 or higher.

Registrar positions are rotated across the two training campuses (Sunshine and Footscray).  Both Emergency Departments (ED) are accredited by ACEM (Australasian College for Emergency Medicine) for Advanced Training as urban district sites. Sunshine ED currently treats over 100,000 patient presentations per year. This includes over 28,000 paediatric presentations in a dedicated paediatric area. Emergency obstetrics and gynaecology are also predominantly seen at this campus. Footscray ED manages over 40,000 adult patient presentations per year. Both departments offer exposure to a diverse and interesting case mix in a well-supported environment with access to all major surgical and medical specialties.

Both sites are supported by active on the floor Consultant leadership, supervision and education from 0730hrs – 2400hrs, seven days a week. Our education program is well regarded with an excellent teaching and exam preparation program with a 99.9% examination success rate at the primary and fellowship levels, access to numerous ACEM examiners and hands on supervision and teaching at the bedside. ACEM Emergency Medicine Certificate (EMC) candidates are also well supported.  There is the potential to support candidates in the Intermediate or Advanced Emergency Medicine Training Programs (IEMTP, AEMTP). An active research team provides support for those interested in research through the Joseph Epstein Centre for Emergency Medicine Research.

Whilst this position is predominantly focused on treating adult patients, Western Health has excellent access to rotations required to fulfil all the requirements of the ACEM Fellowship training program. From the ED registrar pool, we also fill positions in;

  • Paediatric ED (Sunshine Hospital ED)
  • Simulation (ACEM Special Skills accredited)
  • Medical Education (ACEM Special Skills accredited)
  • Intensive Care
  • Anaesthetics
  • Major referral ED/Trauma (RMH)
  • Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital

All these rotations are competitively allocated. Please indicate your interest in these external positions as part of your application letter. Other rotations may also be arranged by request including, but not limited to, general medicine and addiction medicine.

The ED Registrar role is most suited to those with at least 4 years postgraduate experience (PGY4+) including significant ED experience.  A commitment to the ACEM training program is preferred but not mandated.
