About the role

Western Health seeks two suitably qualified applicants for the 2026 Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Clinical Research Fellow position.

The position would be ideally suited to an RACP trainee who has passed the FRACP written and clinical examinations and is hoping to pursue a career in Gastroenterology. Alternatively, it would be suited to a gastroenterology advanced trainee wishing to focus on research.

The position will require active and enthusiastic involvement in all aspects of Gastroenterology research projects at Western Health. This includes involvement in writing ethics applications, seeing patients enrolled in clinical trials, offering medical clinical support to the Gastroenterology Research Nurses, assisting with data acquisition and reporting/manuscript writing for publications.

The studies will encompass a number of areas including viral hepatitis and chronic liver disease, IBD and endoscopy. These will include trials already underway, but also the opportunity to focus on an area of interest to the successful candidate under the supervision of a Western Health Consultant.

Some Gastroenterology wards and outpatient clinical involvement will also be expected at the Footscray and Sunshine campuses.

Key responsibilities:

Participate in on-going assessment of competencies via college assessment forms.

Work under the supervision and support of the Head of Unit or Receiving Consultant to further develop general clinical and decision-making skills.

Perform unit duties as delegated by the Unit Head or Receiving Consultant in accordance with Western Health policies and procedures and relevant legislation.

Ensure notification to the appropriate consultant of patients referred to the Department, and provision of initial assessment of referred patients.

Ensure quality patient care via clinical assessment, admissions and development of management.
