In 2026, we are offering hospital medical officer’s an opportunity to join our O&G senior HMO team for twelve months. Gain broad clinical experience across our dynamic network, including the state-of-the-art Joan Kirner Women's and Children's Hospital and the expanding Bacchus Marsh Hospital. This role offers dedicated training, supervised procedural experience (including Elective Caesarean Section training), and strong support for those pursuing the RANZCOG ITP or rural procedural GP pathways.

 

JKWC, a purpose-built women’s and children’s hospital, opened in 2019 and provides Obstetric and Gynaecology services to a large area of Melbourne’s western suburbs. The Obstetric tertiary service provides care to over 6500 pregnant women annually, supported by Maternal Fetal Medicine, Obstetric Medicine, Obstetric Anaesthesia and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit accepting babies born from 26 weeks gestation. Gynaecology services include general ambulatory and inpatient gynaecology, along with subspecialty units comprising gynae-oncology, urogynaecology and minor & complex minimally invasive surgery.

 

Bacchus Marsh Hospital, a lower risk and acuity service, joined the Western Health network in 2021. The obstetric service is expected to grow to approximately 1000 births annually whilst the gynaecology service is expanding to support a large number of theatre sessions and extensive ambulatory services.

 

Key responsibilities:

This comprehensive 12-month role offers invaluable skill development across the breadth of Obstetrics & Gynaecology through rotations at both Joan Kirner Women's and Children's Hospital (JKWC) and Bacchus Marsh Hospital, including:

  • Dedicated Elective Caesarean Section (ECS) Training: Gain hands-on experience and develop proficiency in performing caesarean sections under the direct guidance of an experienced O&G Consultant
  • Dynamic Birthing Suite Experience: You will actively contribute to our acute obstetric service (Birth Suite and Maternity Assessment Centre), honing your skills in the primary assessment of pregnant women, comprehensive labour management, operative vaginal deliveries, and essential emergency obstetric procedures
  • Comprehensive Outpatient Gynaecology: Develop your skills in our general gynaecology outpatient clinic with supervised training in minor surgical procedures such as intrauterine device insertions and hysteroscopy D&Cs. You will also gain valuable experience in our Early Pregnancy Assessment Service (EPAS), managing common first-trimester issues like vaginal bleeding and miscarriage.
  • Specialised Antenatal Care: Participate in Antenatal Clinics, including a rotation through our Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) unit, gaining exposure to the management of complex pregnancies.
  • Supported Emergency Gynaecology Experience: You will receive referrals from the Sunshine Hospital Emergency Department (EDOG), where you will review, assess, and develop management plans for acute gynaecological presentations within a supportive clinical setting.
  • Rostered Night Duty: Contribute to the continuous care of our inpatients across obstetrics, gynaecology, and the peri-operative period, further developing your clinical acumen.
  • Active Participation in Education and Quality Improvement: Engage in a range of educational, training, and audit activities to enhance your knowledge and contribute to service improvement.
  • Engaging Research Opportunities: Explore and contribute to research projects within both Obstetrics and Gynaecology, fostering a culture of inquiry.
  • Pathway to Procedural Skills: Benefit from the opportunity to undertake the Associate Training Program - Procedural (formerly DRANZCOG), enhancing your practical skills.
  • Further Specialisation Opportunities: Potential exists for further involvement in specialist services such as pelvic floor disorders, gynaecological oncology, infertility, and advanced endoscopic surgery, broadening your exposure.

 

Upon successful completion of this 12-month term, you can expect to have:

  • Gained broad and comprehensive exposure to the diverse field of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, providing a strong foundation for the FRANZCOG Integrated Training Program.
  • Benefited from opportunities to act at a Junior Registrar level (e.g., during leave cover), offering valuable experience in a more senior role.
  • Received dedicated support in pursuing your career aspirations, including guidance and assistance with your application to the RANZCOG ITP National Selection process or the Associate Training Program - Advanced Procedural (formerly Advanced DRANZCOG) for rural GP/ACCRM pathway applicants.

 

About you:

To be considered for this exciting Senior HMO position in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, applicants must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Completed PGY2+ or above at time of application.
  • Possess a minimum of six (6) months of prior clinical experience in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in pursuing a career in Women’s Health and meet the Eligibility Criteria for application to either the RANZCOG Training Program or the Associate Training Program - Advanced Procedural.
