2027 Critical Care HMO (PGY3+)

About the role:
There are eight (8) Critical Care HMO positions, including rotations across Anaesthesia, Intensive Care, Emergency Medicine, and Williamstown Nights:
- 4 x Anaesthesia Stream
- 2 x Intensive Care Stream
- 2 x Emergency Medicine Stream
Rotation order is fixed to ensure that prevocational training requirements are met for applications in the subsequent year. Each specialty college specifies minimum experience requirements for eligibility. The rotation structure has therefore been designed to ensure that trainees in each stream meet the relevant college eligibility criteria.

The nights rotation is generally based at Williamstown Hospital. There is no after-hours operating at this site, with the role primarily involving covering the surgical ward and sub-acute medical wards.
The selection process for these positions is highly competitive. Appointments are based on a combination of curriculum vitae (CV), references, and interview performance. As Western Health typically interviews only up to one fifth of applicants, it is important to ensure that your CV clearly outlines all relevant experience, including: clinical exposure, courses, academic awards and honours, research activity, philanthropic work, and broader hospital involvement. Critical Care HMOs will work under appropriate senior supervision during their rotations – including consultant-led care in Anaesthesia, and senior registrar and consultant oversight in ICU and ED. Within this supported environment, successful applicants will have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate a junior registrar approach to their work. Professionalism, initiative, reliability, and a willingness to learn are therefore essential attributes.
Key responsibilities:
- Work under the supervision and support of the registrar or consultant to further develop general clinical and decision-making skills.
- Assume responsibility for patient care in accordance with the care model of the ward/unit, ensuring that clinical procedures are performed in accordance with Western Health policy and procedure.
- Undertake clinical assessments of urgent and non-urgent patients within clinically appropriate time frames and participate in the ordering and interpretation of clinical investigations, ensuring communication of abnormal results.
- Participate in on-going assessment of competencies via a mid and end of term unit assessment
About you:
- Medical qualification recognised in Victoria, Australia
- Current registration with the Medical Board of Australia
- Completion, or expected completion by the commencement of the position, of PGY1 and PGY2 in accordance with the National Framework for Prevocational Medical Training, or equivalent experience
- Demonstrated clinical competence
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team
- Commitment to ongoing professional development
