About the role:

The Assistant Director of Nursing & Midwifery (ADONM) provides senior clinical leadership across Western Health, supporting the Director and Directors of Nursing & Midwifery to implement governance frameworks that improve care quality, safety and workforce outcomes. The role ensures professional nursing and midwifery standards are upheld in line with NMBA requirements and Western Health policies.

 

Working collaboratively across all sites, the ADONM leads key portfolios aligned to the Best Care Framework, including the Deteriorating Patient Standard and elements of the Comprehensive Care Standard such as end-of-life and bariatric care. The ADONM provides operational leadership, risk management oversight, performance monitoring and onsite support to clinical areas, acting as a senior point of contact in the absence of the Director. As a Registered Nurse, the ADONM demonstrates expert practice across leadership, education, research, evidence-based practice and clinical expertise to deliver high-quality, compassionate, patient-centred care.

 

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide senior clinical leadership to nursing and midwifery teams, role modelling professional standards, accountability and Western Health values.
  • Lead clinical governance, quality, safety and accreditation activities to ensure compliance with NSQHS and organisational requirements.
  • Drive evidence-based practice, research and continuous improvement to improve clinical outcomes and consumer experience.
  • Deliver expert clinical and operational leadership across designated portfolios, building workforce capability, monitoring performance and supporting services in the absence of the Director of Nursing & Midwifery.

  • You demonstrate expert clinical knowledge, applying evidence-based practice and driving continuous improvement and innovation in care delivery.
  • You lead with integrity, modelling professional standards, accountability, and Western Health values, while fostering collaboration and high-performing teams.
  • You have proven skills in clinical governance, risk management, accreditation and compliance, ensuring safe, high-quality outcomes for patients and staff.
  • You are a mentor and educator, committed to building workforce capability, developing others, and supporting professional growth and succession planning.
