Chemical Safety Coordinator

About the role

Western Health is seeking an experienced and motivated Chemical Safety Coordinator to join our Safety, Risk & Emergency Management team within People & Culture. This role is responsible for leading the safe management of hazardous chemicals across our health service, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements, reducing workplace risk, and supporting a culture of safety excellence. Working closely with clinical and non-clinical stakeholders, you will provide expert advice, deliver training, coordinate chemical risk management initiatives, and contribute to creating a safe environment for our patients, staff, visitors and community.

Key responsibilities:

• Lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of chemical safety programs, systems and procedures.
• Manage hazardous chemical inventories, Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and manifest records across Western Health facilities.
• Conduct chemical risk assessments, investigate incidents and near misses, and implement effective corrective actions.
• Deliver chemical safety training, education programs and awareness initiatives for staff.
• Collaborate with departments including Pharmacy, Pathology, Engineering and Environmental Services to ensure safe chemical management and regulatory compliance.

About you:

• Tertiary qualification in Chemistry, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
• Demonstrated experience managing chemical safety within healthcare, laboratory or similarly regulated environments.
• Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, standards and codes of practice relating to hazardous chemicals and dangerous goods.
• Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and training facilitation skills.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and risk assessment capabilities, with the ability to influence safety outcomes across multidisciplinary teams.
