About the Role:

Western Health, a leading tertiary health service, proudly serves Melbourne's diverse, multicultural western suburbs through three dynamic Emergency Departments at Footscray, Sunshine, and Williamstown Hospitals alongside Urgent Care centres at Bacchus Marsh and Melton.  

 

Victoria's largest healthcare infrastructure project – the New Footscray Hospital opened in February 2026 creating unprecedented opportunities for Emergency Registrars to join our high-performing teams. The $1.5 billion New Footscray Hospital will deliver over 500 beds and a state-of-the-art Emergency Department projected to manage 55,000+ presentations annually, featuring expanded resuscitation bays, fast-track streaming, short-stay observation, and an 8-bed Mental Health & AOD Hub (mid-2026). Footscray ED currently sees over 40,000 adult patient presentations per year.  

 

Sunshine Hospital is one of Australia's busiest ED’s with 110,000+ presentations/year (including 28,000 paediatric cases). It includes dedicated areas for acute ED presentations as well as fast track, short stay unit, resuscitation and mental health/AOD services and a dedicated paediatric ED. Emergency obstetrics and gynaecology are also predominantly seen at this campus. 

 

Both departments offer exposure to a diverse and interesting case mix in a well-supported environment with access to all major surgical and medical specialties and are supported by active on the floor Consultant leadership, supervision and education for 16+ hours/ day, seven days/week.  

 

Our education program is well regarded. We offer regular weekly teaching to cater for the needs of junior medical staff working in the department. As well as weekly protected teaching time for Registrars, there is excellent support (and exam success) for both the ACEM Primary and Fellowship exam. There is also support for candidates wishing to pursue the ACEM Foundational Emergency Medicine Training Programs (FEMTP). An active research team provides support for those interested in research through the Joseph Epstein Centre for Emergency Medicine Research.  

 

The ED Registrar role is most suited to those with at least 4 years postgraduate experience (PGY4+) including significant ED experience.  A commitment to the ACEM training program is preferred but not mandated.  

 

Whilst this position is predominantly focused on treating adult patients, Western Health has excellent access to rotations required to fulfil all the requirements of the ACEM Fellowship training program. From the ED registrar pool, we also fill positions in:

  • Paediatric ED (Sunshine Hospital ED).     
  • Simulation (ACEM Special Skills accredited suitable for TS4). 
  • Medical Education (ACEM Special Skills accredited suitable for TS4).  
  • Intensive Care.  
  • Anaesthetics.
  • Major referral ED/Trauma (RMH).  
  • Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital  (ACEM Special Skills Non-ED time accredited suitable for TS4).

Key Responsibilities:  

  • See patients in the Emergency Department and undertake patient assessment and management plans in consultation with the Emergency Physician in Charge.  
  • Ensure quality patient care via clinical assessment, admissions and development of management plans. Ensure quality patient care to support the Victorian Government's Statement of Priorities.  
  • Perform clinical duties as directed by the Emergency Physician in accordance with Western Health policies and procedures and relevant legislation.
  • Participate in the development of discharge plans that reflects the needs of patients and their significant others and demonstrates understanding of the role of community providers.
  • Assume responsibility for communication with community providers.
  • Provide supervision for the clinical activities of the junior medical staff on the unit, according to the level of experience of the individual.  

 

About You:  

  • A medical qualification recognised in Victoria, Australia.
  • Current medical registration or eligibility for Provisional Registration with AHPRA.
  • Clinical competence as required for level of position.
  • At least 12 months of experience in ED at HMO level or above.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Commitment to professional development.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the training pathways of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine, or other college programs where ED experience is valued (strongly desirable).
