Western Health is seeking an experienced, thoughtful and accountable leader to join our Medical Workforce Unit (MWU) as Manager, Senior Medical Staff & Business Systems (SMS & BS).
This is a significant leadership role responsible for strengthening the systems, processes and governance that support more than 1,000 Senior Medical Staff across our growing health service.
About the role:
As the Manager, SMS & BS, you will provide senior leadership across all SMS workforce functions, including recruitment, appointment and contract management, credentialing, scope of practice, contracts administration, billing and invoicing, governance and financial oversight.
You will lead a specialist team, partner closely with Heads of Unit, clinical leaders, HR, Finance, Payroll and executive stakeholders and drive improvements that lift the quality, accuracy and reliability of SMS workforce and MWU services.
The role includes leading value-add projects, improvement initiatives, digitisation and policy/SOP development, as well as ensuring a strong and supportive development pathway for MWU staff.
This is a senior leadership position within the MWU and includes acting for the Director as required, providing operational coverage for the Manager, JMS and rotating portfolios every 12–24 months to strengthen capability and your leadership journey.
What Will You Lead and Deliver
High-quality SMS workforce operations
- Overseeing SMS recruitment support, appointment processes, contract development and recredentialing
- Ensuring documentation, credentialing (including Cgov), Visas and registrations are accurate and compliant
- Serving as the senior liaison for SMS workforce queries
Leadership, culture and team capability
- Leading and developing a specialist coordination team
- Building a culture of accountability, customer service and professionalism
- Delivering a strong capability-building pathway for MWU staff
Continuous improvement, systems development and projects
- Leading value-add projects, transformation initiatives and digital improvements
- Updating and embedding contemporary policies, procedures and standard operating processes
- Strengthening governance frameworks, documentation, reporting and data systems
Financial governance, billing and business systems
- Managing MWU billing, invoicing, CME claims, debt management and contractual arrangements
- Leading financial reporting, analysis, costing and business case development
- Strengthening financial controls and ensuring accuracy, transparency and data integrity
About the Medical Workforce Unit (MWU)
The MWU is a dynamic and high-impact team that supports more than 2,000 medical staff across Western Health. We provide strategic direction and hands-on operational leadership in all aspects of medical workforce management, including recruitment, credentialing, contracting, rostering, onboarding, workforce planning, leave management, timesheets and payroll support.
We work closely with hospital leadership, clinical departments and external partners to ensure our hospitals are safely staffed and able to deliver world-class care to the communities of Melbourne’s West.

Who We're Looking For:
We are seeking a senior leader who brings:
- Strong leadership experience in workforce, operational or business management environments
- High-level financial, analytical and budget experience, ideally within a complex or regulated setting
- Experience with credentialing, medical workforce, HR and/or contract management
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- A strong commitment to accuracy, governance and compliance
- The ability to balance operational pressures with long-term improvement priorities
- Resilience, sound judgement and adaptability in fast-paced environments
- A passion for service excellence, contemporary systems and continuous improvement
- Experience within medical workforce or health administration is highly regarded
