Working within Western Health's multidisciplinary team, the Aboriginal Health Nurse Practitioner provides advanced clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, care coordination, health promotion, and advocacy across the continuum of primary healthcare services.
The role supports women throughout their custodial journey by addressing physical, mental, emotional, social, and cultural health needs, while facilitating access to specialist and community-based services.
Our Aboriginal Health Nurse Practitioner partners with patients, families, Aboriginal health services, Corrections Victoria, and healthcare providers to reduce health inequities, strengthen cultural connection, and support continuity of care both during imprisonment and upon transition back into the community.
Through clinical leadership, cultural expertise, and evidence-based practice, the Aboriginal Health Nurse Practitioner contributes to Western Health's commitment to delivering healthcare services at a standard equivalent to the public health system, ensuring Aboriginal women at DPFC receive respectful, equitable, and culturally responsive care.
Key responsibilities:
Clinical Leadership and Cultural Leadership:
- Provide advanced clinical leadership in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women within the correctional health setting.
- Champion culturally safe, trauma-informed, and patient-centred models of care that address the physical, mental, social, emotional, and cultural wellbeing of women in custody.
- Lead service improvement initiatives and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, Corrections Victoria, and external healthcare providers to improve health outcomes and continuity of care.
Evidence-Based Practice and Quality Improvement:
- Deliver autonomous, evidence-based clinical care aligned with Nurse Practitioner standards, contemporary research, clinical guidelines, and Western Health policies.
- Identify health inequities and implement targeted interventions that improve access, quality, safety, and health outcomes for Aboriginal women in custody.
- Contribute to quality improvement, clinical governance, research, and evaluation activities, using data and evidence to inform practice, enhance service delivery, and support equitable healthcare outcomes.
Education, Learning and Workforce Development:
- Provide clinical education, mentoring, and cultural guidance to nursing, medical, and allied health staff to strengthen capability in Aboriginal health and culturally responsive care.
- Promote continuous learning through the dissemination of best practice, emerging evidence, and innovative models of correctional and Aboriginal healthcare.
- Support patients' health literacy, self-management, and informed decision-making by delivering education that empowers women to engage in their healthcare and prepare for their transition back to the community.
About you:
- Registration and Endorsement: Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and endorsement as a Nurse Practitioner with no restrictions on practice.
- Educational Qualifications: Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner) or equivalent NMBA-approved qualification leading to Nurse Practitioner endorsement.
- Prescribing and Provider Eligibility: Current Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) prescriber number and eligibility to obtain and maintain a Medicare Provider Number.
- Advanced Clinical Experience: Demonstrated ability to provide autonomous, evidence-based advanced nursing practice, including comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prescribing, referral, and care coordination within complex healthcare environments.
- Aboriginal Health and Collaborative Practice: Demonstrated commitment to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, with experience delivering culturally safe care and working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, community organisations, and diverse stakeholder groups.
Priority consideration will be given to applicants who identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander woman, and who can demonstrate cultural knowledge and lived experience relevant to providing culturally safe health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in custody.
