Orthopaedic Surgeon

About the role:

This role will assist in the provision of elective and emergency orthopaedic surgical services across Western Health. The Locum Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon will provide high-quality clinical care to patients accessing Western Health services, contribute to the delivery of safe and effective patient care, supervise and support the training of Junior Medical Staff, and assist in achieving Western Health's strategic priorities and service objectives.

Key responsibilities: 

• Provide high-quality, safe, and evidence-based orthopaedic care in accordance with Western Health policies, procedures, and clinical governance frameworks.
• Assume responsibility for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of patients, ensuring clinical care is delivered in accordance with accepted professional standards and best practice.
• Analyse and utilise clinical data, audit findings, and outcome measures to inform decision-making, monitor performance, and support continuous quality improvement initiatives.
• Identify, escalate, and contribute to the resolution of clinical and operational issues affecting patient care, ensuring relevant matters are communicated to the Head of Unit/Department as appropriate.
• Ensure delegated clinical responsibilities are appropriate to the experience and competence of Junior Medical Staff, providing oversight and accountability for the care delivered.
• Provide consistent leadership, supervision, mentoring, and education to Junior Medical Staff to support their professional development and the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care.
• Contribute to teaching, training, and workforce development activities within the Orthopaedic Unit and broader Western Health services.

About you: 

You are a dedicated and forward-thinking clinician who:

• Membership to the Australian Orthopaedic Association.
• Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Surgeons.
• Current Australian medical registration with AHPRA.
• Demonstrated strong clinical skills and knowledge, supported by excellent communication and interpersonal abilities. A high level of commitment to delivering safe, high‑quality patient care is essential.
• Proven experience in the supervision, teaching, and support of Junior Medical Staff.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team, contributing to a cohesive and patient‑centred service.
