About the role 

Western Health is seeking a General Paediatrician to join our Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s team for 6 months to cover sabbatical leave, from February 2026. 

 

The paediatricians at Western Health manage a broad array of paediatric health issues, providing comprehensive and compassionate care to the multicultural paediatric population of Western Melbourne.  The position will cover both inpatient general paediatrics and outpatient services.   Consultant paediatrician outpatient clinics manage a range of complex general and developmental patients.  The Paediatrician will also be actively involved in the teaching and supervision of junior medical staff and medical students on the ward and in clinics. There are ample opportunities for peer review and discussion, and the unit has a supportive and collegiate culture. 

 

Clinical appointment is 0.4 FTE (Mondays and Tuesdays; weekends on-call will also be required).   Whilst predominantly located at our Joan Kirner Women's and Children's (Sunshine Hospital) site, the successful candidate may be required to do occasional on-call at our Bacchus Marsh site which provides neonatal care.  There is a 3-bed SCN, and approximately 800 births per year at the site.  The paediatrician is required to be immediately available, and family-friendly comfortable accommodation is provided across the road from the hospital for any periods on-call.  

 

This role commences 3rd February for 6 months, with some flexibility in start date during February if required. 

 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Provide high quality clinical care to children in both the inpatient and outpatient settings
  • Communicate effectively with parents, staff, and external services in a timely manner
  • Provide teaching to junior medical staff and medical students, including bedside tutorials for students
  • Participate in quality and safety activities within the unit

 

About you: 

  • You will have recognised qualifications as a General Paediatrician with experience in managing patients across general, developmental, and behavioural paediatric medicine.
  • You will have recent acute inpatient experience, ideally at Consultant level.
  • You will contribute to a positive organisational culture and role model professionalism with respect to patient dignity and compassion, effective communication, and ethical clinical care.
  • You will actively participate in teaching and supervision of Junior Medical Staff and Medical Students.
  • You will ensure appropriate and timely documentation of patient care in progress notes and correspondence.
