About the Role

An exciting fixed-term (up to 15 months) opportunity exists for an enthusiastic Advanced Trainee in Public Health Medicine to join the Western Public Health Unit (WPHU) based at Western Health. This position will deliver an integrated approach to public health, working across health protection, population health and addressing health inequities as part of a team in the Western region of metropolitan Melbourne.

 

Western Health is seeking to recruit an engaging Public Health Registrar in a full-time position for up to 15 months, commencing from end November 2025. 

 

The Western Public Health Unit has been established to strengthen the public health response to communicable diseases, other health protection challenges and broader public health issues. The Unit sits within the Operations Directorate of Western Health and is part of a Network of three metropolitan public health units and six regional public health units providing a state-wide system of public health delivery and oversight. The Public Health Registrar within WPHU will undertake risk assessment, risk management and risk communication activities, gain operational experience especially in communicable disease control, and provide strategic advice and leadership in the area of health protection and other public health topics.

 

Key responsibilities:

  • Health protection experience across a full scope of communicable disease control functions, including participating in a duty and oncall roster
  • Undertaking projects to promote primary prevention in population health, including taking action on health inequalities within the catchment
  • Engaging in a strong learning environment, including providing education and teaching for other staff in the Unit

About you:

  • Current registration as a medical practitioner in Australia with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency  
  • Current status as an advanced trainee with the Australasian Faculty of Public Health Medicine at the time of commencement, or eligibility and intention to join the training scheme
  • A strong commitment to improving the health of populations and willingness to apply public health interventions in a flexible and agile way 
  • An ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team, showing initiative, strong communication and a passion for sharing skills and expertise
