Registered Nurse - Neonatal and Postnatal Support Nurse

This role of the NPSN is an integral part of ensuring our mothers and babies are not separated within the first few days of their lives. This role focuses on providing timely assessment, monitoring, and intervention for newborns requiring additional support, helping to minimise unnecessary separation from their mothers whenever it is safe to do so. A key responsibility of the NPSN is the early recognition of neonatal deterioration and the prompt escalation of care in accordance with Western Health's Recognising and Responding to Deterioration Standard.

Key responsibilities:
- Caring for babies receiving phototherapy; including setting up biliblankets and overhead light equipment, and taking baby bloods through the heel prick method.
- Caring for babies of low birth weight, late pre-term, or other babies that require increased care on the postnatal ward, including supporting feeding methods as per the woman's choice, in line with the WH Standard of Partnering with Consumers.
- Liaising with the neonatal team and families daily, to assist in the provision of safe and Comprehensive Care.
- Recognising deterioration and timely escalation as appropriate to the In-Charge and neonatal team of the day, in line with the WH Standard of Communicating for Safety, and Recognising and Responding to Deterioration.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to educate, support, and encourage mothers to initiate and maintain breastfeeding, providing evidence-based care that promotes successful lactation in accordance with Western Health policies and best practice.
- Maintains compliance with all annual mandatory hospital competencies, including successful completion of the Neonatal Life Saving competency, to ensure safe, evidence-based, and high-quality patient care.
About you:
An NPSN should be a highly motivated individual, with a passion for improving women's experiences of hospital admission alongside a baby with increased clinical needs. At the forefront of this care is patient safety, therefore an NPSN should be excellent at time-management, and accountable for their practice at all times.
