About the role

Western Health Rehabilitation Medicine Unit has an inpatient rehabilitation and a rehabilitation at home program.  A 30 bed rehabilitation specific ward located at the Sunshine Hospital, specializes in neurological, acquired brain injury, spinal, orthopaedic, amputee and reconditioning rehabilitation streams.  A rehab at home program consisting of 15 virtual beds, provides ‘rehabilitation in the home’ for suitable patients who have appropriate rehabilitation goals and do not require hospital level nursing and medical care. 

 

Applications are invited from suitably qualified Medical Officers interested in pursuing further training as a Registrar in Rehabilitation Medicine. We are offering 2 accredited registrar positions at Western Health commencing early February 2026.  The registrars will be actively supported by 6 rehabilitation medicine physicians in the department of rehabilitation medicine. 

 

Positions are each for a 12 month placement looking after inpatients on the rehabilitation ward at Sunshine hospital or patients admitted to the rehab at home program.  Other registrar responsibilities include rehabilitation consults on the acute wards, provide pre-amputation counselling as part of the diabetic foot service, attending case conference/multidisciplinary team meetings and outpatient clinics, supervision of rotating JMS and medical student teaching.  Western Health is committed to research and innovation in health care and would actively support each trainee in their areas of interest to achieve their career goals.

Key responsibilities:

  • The Rehab at Home registrar will have responsibility for up to 15 patients on the Rehab at Home program
  • Perform rehabilitation consults on the acute wards, provide pre-amputation counselling as part of the diabetic foot service, attend stroke/neurology MDT meetings and a rehabilitation medicine and spasticity management outpatient clinic
  • Accurately reflect the patient’s requirements, outcomes or events within prescribed Western Health documentation, ensuring all legal requirements are met in regards to legibility of content and identity of reporter in accordance with Western Health policies and procedures
  • Participate in the development of discharge plans that reflects the needs of patients and their significant others and demonstrates understanding of the role of community providers. Assume responsibility for communication with community providers

 

About you:

To be Successful in this Role, you:

  • Must be registered with AHPRA    
  • Must hold an appropriate employment visa if not an Australian Citizen or Resident
  • Must be eligible for an advanced training position in rehabilitation medicine, or a provisional advanced training position with RACP
